America prints its first Qur'an
A Springfield, Massachusetts press issues the first Qur'an printed in the United States: the Ross translation, published for Isaiah Thomas Jr. John Adams owned a copy, the only one known to have belonged to a president.
The 1806 edition used Alexander Ross's 17th-century English rendering (via André du Ryer's French): a different translation from George Sale's, the London edition Jefferson bought as a law student. Hundreds of copies survive in American collections.
