Ayuba Suleiman Diallo returns to Africa

The Fulani Muslim scholar, who could write out the Qur'an from memory, enslaved in Maryland in 1731, is freed and returns home after his Arabic literacy draws attention in England.

Diallo reportedly wrote out the Qur'an from memory; his account became one of the earliest widely published narratives of an enslaved African Muslim.
