Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom

Virginia enacts Jefferson's statute. Looking back in 1821, Jefferson wrote that lawmakers refused to add 'Jesus Christ' to it so that it would protect 'the Jew and the Gentile, the Christian and Mahometan, the Hindoo, and infidel of every denomination.'
