Islam gets a seat at the Parliament of Religions

Alexander Russell Webb, a former U.S. consul to the Philippines who embraced Islam in 1889, stands as the sole representative of Islam at the World's Parliament of Religions in Chicago, delivering two addresses published in its proceedings.

Webb went on to open an Islamic reading room on Broadway in Manhattan and publish the Moslem World newspaper: the first sustained Muslim press in America run by an American-born convert.
