Muslims in the Civil War

Nicholas Said enlists in the 55th Massachusetts Colored Regiment and rises to sergeant; nearly 300 Muslims are documented as serving in the war.

The 55th was the sister regiment to the famed 54th Massachusetts. Said's fluency in multiple languages made him a valued noncommissioned officer.
