Two ambassador's sons remake American music
Ahmet and Nesuhi Ertegun, sons of the Muslim Turkish ambassador, had hosted integrated jazz sessions at the D.C. embassy in defiance of segregation. In 1947 Ahmet founds Atlantic Records: the label of Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, and Led Zeppelin.
The brothers also staged Washington's first integrated jazz concert after the National Press Club refused them. Ahmet later co-founded the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
