Yarrow Mamout gains his freedom

After 44 years enslaved, the Fulani Muslim Yarrow Mamout is freed in Georgetown, later becoming a property owner and financier with stock in the Bank of Columbia.

Manumission dates vary by source (commonly 1796; some records cite 1807). His bank shares were likely held via a nominee because Black Codes restricted his legal standing.
